The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Washington, D.C., on Saturday evening hosted a solemn vigil and memorial service in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The event, led by Kenya’s Ambassador to the United States, David Kerich, was held at the Kenyan Chancery and brought together members of the Kenyan Diaspora for a night of reflection and remembrance.
In a statement, the embassy said the gathering was a powerful show of unity, patriotism, and shared national pride as Kenyans abroad joined hands to celebrate Raila’s life and legacy.
The service was officiated by Rev. Capt. Carolyne Adhola of St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church.
It featured emotional tributes, prayers, and a candle-lighting ceremony to honour the man fondly known as “Baba.”
Speakers paid tribute to Raila’s lifelong commitment to democracy, justice, and national unity, describing him as a visionary leader whose ideals transformed Kenya’s political landscape.
“His visionary leadership, commitment to democratic ideals, pursuit of justice, and dedication to national unity continue to inspire generations in Kenya and the wider African continent,” Kerich noted.
The embassy also extended heartfelt appreciation to members of the Kenyan community in the US for turning out in large numbers to pay their respects.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to the Kenyan Diaspora for their unwavering solidarity in honouring a true national hero whose legacy endures,” the statement read.
